Link Building for Small Sites: What Worked Without a Big Budget

Heber Ahlstrom2 min read

The link building tactics that worked on my niche sites: resource pages, outreach with a real reason, and small-scale digital PR.

Every small site needs links, and almost every small site can't afford to buy them, and that's fine, because buying links never worked anyway.

I built the authority of my niche sites without a budget. The tactics weren't clever. They were consistent, and they had a reason behind them, which is the part most outreach is missing.

Thousands of sites maintain lists of useful resources, and those lists need to be current. Find the ones in your niche, check whether your site or a competitor's is listed, and pitch an improvement.

The pitch is simple: here's a page that fits your list, here's why it's better than what you have, here's the one-line description. Short, specific, and done.

Guest posts, but only on sites worth the effort

Guest posting works when the site actually has traffic and trust in your niche. One strong placement a month beats a dozen on sites nobody reads.

Write the best article that site has published in months, not a recycled draft. Editors remember the piece that outperformed, and they link to your work again.

Digital PR on a small budget

Journalists need data and stories. The small-site version of digital PR is publishing a useful dataset or a genuine survey, then emailing the five journalists who have covered that topic before.

You don't need a national survey. A survey of your own customers, with honest numbers, is enough to pitch. Tools like HARO and Qwoted do the matching for you.

Find pages in your niche with dead links, and offer a replacement that exists. Tools like Ahrefs make this searchable, and the response rate is higher than any other cold outreach, because you're helping.

The outreach email that works

Every outreach email I send follows the same shape: a first line about their site that proves I read it, the specific ask, and a way to say yes in ten seconds.

No templates that say "I love your blog." No attachment dumps. One idea, one page, one sentence of why it fits.

What I track

Link building without tracking is throwing money into the same hole as link buying. I track new referring domains in Ahrefs monthly and keep an eye on the anchor text mix.

The links need a reason to exist, and that reason starts with content worth linking to, which is what my keyword research guide feeds, and the pages that earn links are built with the on-page process in my guide to what actually moves organic traffic.
